The work undertaken by the nuclear industry is wide-ranging. A single business can not do everything. Therefore, all nuclear companies need to build and engage a supply chain to provide the skills and know-how required to succeed.
The lifeblood of the UK Nuclear Industry is the ability of all of the different businesses to do business with each other daily.
Commonly known nuclear procurement activities include:
engineering design services;
provision of specialist expertise;
manufacturing capability and capacity;
testing and commissioning services;
Less commonly known nuclear procurement activities include:
a local bus service requirement;
office supplies;
marketing support;
administration support;
facilitates management;
leadership training;
recruitment services;
What roles are available to you in the UK nuclear industry if you are interested in getting a role in procurement?

Buyer, Procurement Manager, Procurement Specialist, Commercial Manager, Contracts Manager are the roles you will find in any job search you undertake with the words "nuclear procurement".
Even if you have a job title you are interested in, one company's Contracts Manager is another company's Buyer making the whole process complicated and confusing.
The better approach is to consider what skills and experience you have and hone your search in on the jobs roles and responsibilities rather than the job titles.

The international gold standard for procurement specialists is the Chartered Institute of Procurement & Supply (CIPS). You will see many more senior roles looking for you to be a member with the designation MCIPS after your names.
This requirement with specific experience working within the particular job segment, e.g. nuclear submarines, nuclear cranes, EPC contract management, will put you at the front of the queue when applying for many senior roles.
Don't let not having nuclear experience be a reason to not apply for the role that you think best matches your skills.
One of the main ways the industry is looking to change to meet the increase in resource demand is to cast a wider net and bring in people from other sectors - Sector Jumpers.
We have a whole separate post on sector jumping, which is worth a read. The summary is:
Write down your skills, qualifications and experience.
Search for jobs in the nuclear sector that match your SQEP in #1.
Skills-map those in the job description vs your skillset.
Look at the opportunities to upskill or dive in and apply for the role.
We are happy to have a quick 20 mins chat with you on the above if you would like. Just get in touch via our contact page or any of our social media channels.
