UK Nuclear Security Vetting: BPSS, CTC, SC and DV

Checks for a nuclear job depend on the duties, access and organisation. Read the vacancy and ask the employer's recruitment or security team which requirements apply. Do not assume everyone needs the same clearance.

Nuclear Vetting and Security

BPSS is screening, not formal security clearance

The Government Baseline Personnel Security Standard is pre-employment screening for access to government assets. It is not a formal national security clearance. Checks cover identity, right to work, employment history and unspent criminal convictions.

What are CTC, SC and DV?

National security vetting includes Counter Terrorist Check, Security Check and Developed Vetting, alongside other categories. The responsible authority sets the requirement for the post. Higher clearance is not a qualification every nuclear applicant needs.

Civil nuclear and defence arrangements

ONR is the vetting authority for the regulated civil nuclear industry. Defence and other employers may use different sponsoring arrangements. Ask the recruiting organisation how its process applies to your role.

Can you arrange clearance yourself?

BPSS Screening

UK national security vetting needs a sponsor connected to the role. For contractors, the organisation owning the requirement acts as sponsor. Follow its instructions rather than paying for a course or certificate presented as a substitute.

Questions to ask before applying

Ask which checks are required, when they begin and whether the offer is conditional. Confirm nationality, residence-history and access restrictions with the employer; a general article cannot determine your eligibility.

Ask how to supply records securely and who can explain uncertainties. Prepare accurate information and disclose it through the requested official process.

Timing and existing clearance

Do not rely on a guaranteed completion date or assume an existing clearance covers a new role. Ask the sponsor about any review or transfer requirements and when you may start relevant duties.

What belongs on your CV?

Follow the application instructions. Keep detailed security and personal information within approved channels. Describe relevant experience honestly without claiming permissions you do not hold.

Plan your next step

Choose a role that fits your evidence, identify one development gap and compare suitable learning before making a commitment.
