Step 5 - Know The People

The fifth step in the get into nuclear process is one that is normally skipped by most people looking for a role in any industry. This step is all about finding out further information on the key influencers in the specific function, field or even industry that you are looking to find a role in. The aim is to find out who’s who and whether it is possible to contact them or learn from them to increase your chances of getting into nuclear.

If you have jumped straight into Step 5 you can start at Step 1 – Know Who You Are.

This massively influential step is often overlooked. A recent advertisement from LinkedIn stated that 85% of roles are filled via networking - i.e. by someone that they know.

The Influencers: - Influencers in any industry to can be sought out via many mediums; twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn or a simple google search will help you to find them. Here at Get Into Nuclear we are currently working on a Top Influencers in the Nuclear Industry which we will be issuing soon. However, in the meantime we would consider getting in touch with the key recruiters (mentioned below) or a good start could be searching on LinkedIn for a “[function / job title] + “nuclear”].

The Recruiters: - Recruitment companies and in particular the recruiters themselves can catch a bad rep and this in no different in the UK Nuclear Industry. Many recruiters are criticised for being transactional and not having the personal development of a person through their career at heart. However, you tend to not find that this is the case in nuclear which could be due to the professional nature of the business, the difficulty in source suitable applicants or maybe we are just lucky in this industry? However, if you find a role that you are interested in there is usually contact details attached to the advertisement so quote Jordan Belfort from The Wolf of Wall Street “pick up the phone and start dialling”.
