#3 Get to know the business #4 and the skills you require
#5 Get to know the people who can help you land that role
#6 Be known and put yourself in a position to land that role
Step 2 - Know What You Want
The second step in the get into nuclear process is to define what it is that you ultimately want; your priorities, goals, aspirations and lifestyle wants/needs. This again is a fundamental step that must be completed before commencing the remainder of the process.
If you have jumped straight into Step 2 you can find Step 1 – Know Who You Are here.
Priorities: - This is a really important step where you consider all your roles in life and start to consider your priorities – this may feel a little deep we know but it is a really important step in the process. Common roles include; Parent, Spouse, Homeowner, Son/Daughter, Friend, Member of the Community, Church Member, Sports Team Coach, Athlete, Student the list is literally endless. Once you have defined your roles in your life it’s time to consider them in order of priority – it may be important to you to leave work at 4pm every day to make football training or you may be happy to relocate for a new role if it means a pay rise to provide for your family.
Goals/Aspirations: - In Step 1 – Know Who You Are you considered your current situation, where you are working and what you are doing. As part of this exercise it’s time to consider are you where you want to be? This involves the level of seniority and responsibility that you have, the career progression that you can see before you and whether the work is fulfilling – i.e. do you feel that you are making a difference? It’s easy here to just say “I want more money”. Try to avoid this and think about the roles itself, the money side is considered next.
Lifestyle wants/needs: - This is where it is time to let your imagination run wild and have a bit of fun. What is it that you want from a lifestyle point of view? Be aspiration but also realistic here. Do you want to be able to have two holidays every year abroad with the family? Do you want to be able to work 4 days per week? Do you want to say, “I work in nuclear”? Do you want job security? Is the ability to travel with work appealing? Is a BMW company car a priority? Do you want to relocate to a more rural village environment?
Once you have completed this step along with Step 1 –Know Who You Are you will have painted a very good picture of yourself and where you want to be. There will be the basis of your route into nuclear throughout the remaining four steps.
