Key Area of Responsibility

The role will require the candidate to work in the field of pipe fitting operations, which involves the following areas; to l ay out, assemble, install, and maintain pipe systems, pipe supports, and related hydraulic and pneumatic equipment for steam, hot water, heating, cooling, lubricating, sprinkling, and industrial production and processing systems. This has to meet strict tolerances and quality standards. These activities will be supporting operations within the nuclear industry.


In your role as an Apprentice Construction Pipefitter, you will:

• Support planning and undertake pipe fitting activities using “Suitably Qualified and Experienced Person” (SQEP) techniques on plant and equipment to meet the production requirements and expectation of site based activities.

• Prepare fitting equipment, tools and fabricated components required for the fitting process.

• Lay out, assemble, install and maintain pipe systems, supports and other related ancilliary equipment as directed by the Supervisor / Mentor.

• Support and create sufficient and suitable records of progress in a timely manner.

• Ensure that to all relevant plans, procedures, risk assessments and permits to work are understood and followed as instructed.

• Record any problems encountered during the progress of the work and notify the Supervisor of the details promptly.

Key Area of Responsibility

The Cavendish Nuclear Job will require the candidate to work in the field of welding operations, which is the joining together of metal components and assemblies using extreme heat generated by electric or gas welding equipment to melt the metal. Welders are required to read and interpret welding specifications, establish the correct process to be used, select the correct material and welding equipment, prepare the material for welding and skillfully weld together the components in accordance with strict tolerances and quality standards. These activities will be supporting operations within the nuclear industry.


As part of a 4 year structured apprenticeship programme during your first year you will attend college full time on a residential basis with our training provider in Birmingham.

Develop and undertake procedures for inspection, maintenance and testing of the security system in order to provide confidence that security system delivery is being effectively managed and the ability to deliver the required security effect is achieved.


Main Purpose of Role

Develop and improve the management of security delivery during normal operations, incidents and emergencies, producing a logical and hierarchical set of documents that describe in detail the processes for managing documentation, operations, and ensuring effective communication within nuclear security.


Develop and improve the security arrangements, ensuring that documentation, guides, templates, process instructions and plans are under appropriate configuration control.


Working with others including nuclear safety, lead on security baseline management, competence management, assurance processes and independently assessed exercises and tests.


Owner of DRDL nuclear security policies and processes, ensuring these are captured in our security management arrangements and provide defence in depth through diversity, optimising approaches that combine all of our security disciplines.


Required Knowledge, Skills, Experience and Competences

Proven experience as a security manager or in another similar role, with experience in security risk analysis and management, including defining and developing organisational governance and oversight arrangements is essential. With this background, you’ll be capable of leading a small team performing audits, assurance activities and compliance inspections, covering the security aspects of DRDL’s management systems, training and competence management regimes and security culture programmes.


While experience in the nuclear industry is certainly helpful, it is not essential and you may have worked in another high-hazard industry or within the security arena.
