About NuGen
NuGen was established as a joint venture between Toshiba and ENGIE (formerly GDF SUEZ). NuGen’s Moorside project aims to develop a new generation nuclear power station of up to 3.8 GW gross capacity on land in West Cumbria, North West England. The plant will use 3 of Westinghouse’s AP1000 reactors and is expected to provide 7% of the UK’s future electricity needs.
The prospect
Working for NuGen offers the chance to be part of an exciting challenge on the forefront of nuclear new build in the UK. NuGen are ramping up their in house capability and look to appoint the most talented engineering team in the market. Engineers will be expected to take ownership of their own discipline and work together as a joint effort to achieve a common goal – to deliver a sound design and safety case in order to achieve permission to construct the power station.
You will find the environment and atmosphere within NuGen’s modern, central Manchester offices open plan offices to be pioneering with a real vibrant buzz and verve.
The Role
Attend relevant Design reviews: Review, verify and give recommendations (approval or rejection) on the Electrical plant design, providing design assurance oversight
Responsible for following up the interaction between Westinghouse and ONR, regarding the Generic Design Assessment process (Electrical Issues)
Establish verification plans to support internal and supply chain design requirement fulfilment
Present & defend design review proposals, for the Lead role this will be in front of NuGen senior management, regulators and other project stakeholders
Review Electrical documentation and specifications
Responsible for oversight of the Electrical Findings Resolution plans, regarding the Generic Design Assessment process (Electrical Findings)
Ensure the performance of the Electrical surveys for Quality Control
Grid connection activity
Develop and promote the electrical discipline within the Design Authority team
As the business develops and matures, so will the role definitions and challenges. Post final investment decision, there will be a heavy engineering focus and design will be translated into construction. Being involved in the project at earlier stages will equip you well for the unique and exciting challenges ahead.
What is expected from the candidate?
Candidates should demonstrate a well-rounded electrical engineering background, within a power generation, although close energy-related backgrounds such as oil and gas will also be considered
Chartered status is expected
High voltage (HV) experience is required, ideally up to 400kv
Experience dealing with National Grid and governing bodies/regulators (in this role, you will also be required to deal with the Office for Nuclear Regulation)
Committed to developing an excellent conventional and nuclear safety culture
Discretion and confidentiality when dealing with sensitive information
