Mott Macdonald are looking for two Structural Engineers, one as a Senior and the other as a Principal:

Both roles are on a Contract basis (ongoing) – the Senior role will be based in the client’s office at Sellafield and the Principal role based at MM’s offices in Cumbria.

The roles are working on Decommissioning projects with a rate of £30-50p/hr dependant upon experience – Chartered status is required for the upper rate.

They have an exciting opportunity within the resurgent Nuclear Energy sector in the UK for a Senior/Principal Civil/Structural Engineer to work on an ongoing Contract basis.

Mott Macdonalds Energy Unit, specifically their Power, Process & Nuclear division are recruiting for a Senior / Principal Civil/structural engineer to join their office in Cumbria.

This role is to support their main client locally and larger nuclear team based in the UK, this role may require occasional travel to other offices for meetings.

The Job Description

Job description will include ability and experience in the following (to varying degrees):

  • Responsible for civil/ structural engineering design services

  • Undertake the services above as required by the role in the project (Lenders Engineer, Owners Engineer, Detailed Designer)

  • Be aware of the level of detail required for the different stages of the project (design at tender, concept, preliminary, detailed design)

  • Check and review of designs undertaken by other engineers

  • Provide guidance and mentoring of less experienced engineers and graduate engineers

  • Undertake design reviews of 3rd party deliverables, and substantiate comments in discussions

  • Conversant with latest codes and standards for design of civil / structural engineering elements in power stations (thermal, renewables, hydro). In addition, ideally conversant in regulations and design philosophies used in civil / structural engineering in the nuclear power generation environment

  • Liaising with other design teams (and other disciplines) in the power station design environment, from both internal and external design parties

  • Maintain client relationships

  • Lead and manage small design teams

  • Maintain project delivery (monitoring of project spends versus budget, delivery to agreed programme)

  • Support business development activities including prospective client visits; preparing bids

  • Already have, or can obtain, security clearance SC1

The Candidate Specification

You will be able to demonstrate strong design experience from a nuclear environment, some project management experience would be advantageous; including design, project execution and delivery. You will have excellent communication and leadership skills. Candidates from a nuclear background would be preferred.

Candidates must be eligible for UK security clearance.

This is a great opportunity for anyone who is an seasoned structural engineer with experience of working within a delivery environment.

The job specification is quite generic with it being key that the candidate must be a SQEP (Suitably Qualified Experienced Person) civil/ structural engineer with experience and background working with ability to have/gain security clearance.

Okay; so let's look at the six steps to get into nuclear:

#1 Know who you are: you are or have been a civil/ structural engineer in with experience of undertaking design reviews and managing a team. You pride yourself on driving high standards and exceptions from within a project team. Nuclear experience would be an advantage but not essential.

#2 Know what you want: You are willing and able to work in the West Cumbria and are looking for the opportunity of a role in which you are fully familiar with and and expert in whilst being given the chance to bring this experience and your transferrable skills to another industry - the nuclear industry.

#3 Know the Business: this is quite a specific role but one that isn't specific to the nuclear industry so there are definitely opportunity to transfer skills from other industries into this role.

#4 Know the Skills: as you can see not many of the highlight requirements to land this role are highlighted as nuclear specific. Previous experience in the UK Nuclear Industry is not a pre-requisite or barrier to entry for this role.

It is always worth considering that you need to meet the vetting requirements as a minimum.
