How to Get Into Nuclear



Here at Get Into Nuclear we aim to help anyone interested in making their mark on arguably one of the most influential industries of our time. This post provides a flavour of what we are trying to do and how we are helping people. The below examples have all come from an email conversation, a discussion with a work associates in the office and a discussion at the bar. What they aim to do is to highlight the vast array of jobs available within the UK Nuclear Industry and provide an outline to the six steps to get into nuclear by defining:

  6. what your next steps need to be.

Get Into Nuclear Working Example 1:

Know who you are:

Operations Manager who has recently been made redundant due to recent developments in the European Market.

Know what you want:

In a consultancy role working a maximum of 3 days per week.

Know the business:

The UK Nuclear Industry has in recent years been predominately about one-off bespoke equipment to meet a specific need in a unique environment. However, more and more through the Nuclear New Builds (NNB) and more recently the drive for Category Management from Sellafield Ltd (SL) the delivery focus of the industry will take on the production of standardised equipment to leverage economies of scale and provide huge through life savings via a simplified maintenance and spares strategy.

Know the skills:

Lean / Six-sigma, batch production planning and manufacturing techniques. Use of European suppliers, standardised design, contract negotiations, production management and monitoring of performance against KPI’s.

Know the people:

To sell these specific skills to the market you need to be getting in touch with a specialist recruitment consultant so that you can leverage their contact base and existing credibility. Someone like Atomic Talent, 235 Consulting or Support2Recruit.

Be known:

Know who you are:

Apprentice plumber with a big personality.

Know what you want:

More money and job security to buy a house.

Know the business:

Many opportunities for Graduates, Apprentices and also Junior Sales / Business Development Roles.

Know the skills:

Hasn’t got a degree so the Grad opps are out. Other requirements are aptitude, drive, confidence, location, ability / willingness to travel. Also a background to pass all of the vetting requirements would be much preferable.

Know the people:

Specific companies (Sellafield Ltd, Nuvia, Ansaldo NES, Atkins etc.) advertise their apprentice opportunities that are recruited on an annual basis. Also worth speaking to specialist in the field who can help you to find the key people to speak to.

Be known:

Update your CV and allow Get Into Nuclear to review it. Know who you are:

Litigation Associate Solicitor. Previously worked as a buyer / department manager. Confident, organised and driven.

Know what you want:

Flexibility, clear career path, reduced working hours and job security.

Know the business:

There are many in-house roles for Commercial Managers, Quantity Surveyors and roles within the various Legal teams. The majority of the big companies have these in house with more and more of the smaller companies are also following suit.

Know the skills:

Degree, legal background, QS qualifications, Commercial understanding of contracts (NEC3 or equivalent).

Know the people:

Roles such as this are always worth discussing with specialist recruitment consultants such as Atomic Talent. You will also find on the Get Into Nuclear jobs boards advertisements for Commercial and Legal roles.

Be known:

Know who you are:

48 year old recently retired police office with 25 years experience working on the beat.

Know what you want:

To top up pension earning and to not have to dip into well earned savings.

Know the business:

Security is fundamental in the UK Nuclear Industry and as such there are many various roles working directly for the Office for Nuclear Regulation (ONR) via the Civil Nuclear Security (CNS) programme - previous known as the Office for Civil Nuclear Security (OCNS) - or directly for a Nuclear Site Licence Company (SLC) or as part of the security team in many of the UK Nuclear Industry sites, workshop, design offices and facilities. This gives much opportunity across the UK but with the industry being spread accross the corners of the UK it the location of the works could be the deciding factor here.

Know the skills:

Prior experience in the security industry, strong leadership and influencer skills and competencies, understanding of H&S requirements, ability to pass and hold National Security Clearance Vetting. Highest levels of integrity, respectfulness and professionalism required at all times. Ability and willingness to travel as and when required.

Know the people:

These roles are usually advertised quite openly on most of the popular jobs boards. It definitely worth also checking out the Triple Bar - Nuclear Security course offered by the National Skills Academy for Nuclear (NSAN).
