Step 3 - Know The Business
The third step in the get into nuclear process is to find out more about the business of the UK Nuclear Industry. This can involve finding out more about the industry in general, the companies, the roles or the future forecasts of workload and resource demand. This step is really important as you need to know all that you can about the UK Nuclear Industry and leverage this information to Get Into Nuclear.

The Industry: - As you would image the UK Nuclear Industry is quite a complex arena. We have tried to make this simple for you here at Get Into Nuclear by splitting the industry into three main sectors being Nuclear Energy, Nuclear Defence and Nuclear Decommissioning. There are other areas of the industry within medicine, research etc. but we’ve stuck to the main arena’s where you’ve the best chance of bagging a role.
The Roles: - The industry encompasses numerous roles ranging from the typical roles of Admin Assistant or Project Manager to industry specific Radiological Protection Advisor (RPA) or Nuclear Physicist to roles that you may not consider to be required in the UK Nuclear Industry such as Sales or Business Development Manager. Comings and Goings: - As with any industry, but even more so with the UK Nuclear Industry it is an ever-changing field with news, changes in law / government policy and revised strategies all playing their part to change the face of the industry. This has always been the case for the UK Nuclear Industry but never more so than in recent years with the Nuclear New Build (NNB) policies taking centre stage in the media due to the strike rate negotiations and funding issues with EDF and the political wrangling’s of the Trident Nuclear Deterrent programme. Forecasts: - We’d all like a crystal ball to be able to forecast the future. Although we don’t have a crystal ball and policies seem to change quite quickly the added regulation apparent in the UK Nuclear Industry (for very obvious reasons) means that the industry moves at a slightly - okay maybe sometimes frustratingly slow pace. One advantage that this give someone like yourself who is looking to get into or further their career in the UK Nuclear Industry is that trends and market changes can be identified and acted upon pre-empting the changes ahead; for example, it has been years now that a bow-wave of work is due to be coming from the NNBs’, although this is taking longer than forecast it is on its way and creates a plethora of opportunity both for people and business – the art is in the timing as projects unfortunately have a history of slipping to the right.

They have identified that the increased work demand in the industry will require additional works to be undertaken on existing and new nuclear facilities with each and every one of them requiring facilities management, storemen and security which is something that they had never before considered as their route to get into nuclear.
